Chapter 17: Five Days Left
Helena's POV
Randall's mother called me at noon and said only, "Come to the house. Wear something you can sit in."
She was at the kitchen table when I arrived, with her cane hooked on the chair and a pot of tea in front of her.
It was hot. She had made it herself.
"Sit," she said. "He'll be down in a minute. I've told him you're coming."
"What did you tell him?"
"That I watched it."
She poured a cup and pushed it across to me, and I held it in both hands.
"Twice," she said. "The professor is a patient man. I asked for it a second time, because the first time I was only looking at the faces."
"And the second?"
"I listened for what that boy was not saying." She tapped the table once. "He's never once asked for anything for himself. In six years. A man who asks for nothing has a plan."
Randall came in then.
He had shaved, and he wore a plain grey sweater I had bought him at an airport. He looked like someone's husband.
"Helena."
"Randall."
"Thank you for coming."
His mother did not move from her chair.
He stood on the far side of the table and gripped the back of a chair.
"I withdrew the letters," he said. "Both of them. The student's and the professor's. My people sent the notices this morning."
"Good."
"I wanted you to know I did it without being asked."
"You were asked. Your son asked you last night."
"Yes." He took a breath. "I was a coward, Helena."
"Go on."
"I stood in that booth and told the room it was a script, because I couldn't bear it to be anything else."
