Chapter 22: The Same Chair

Helena's POV

The green room smelled of the same coffee as before, and the same plate of pastries sat untouched on the same table.

Randall sat on the sofa with a lawyer on either side of him and a pen in his hand.

His mother sat in the chair by the door, with her cane across her knees.

I stood by the window, and Philip stood beside me, a half step back, with his hands in his pockets.

"Read it to her," Randall said.

The younger lawyer cleared his throat.

"The house on Linden Road transfers to Mrs. Alder in full. Her savings account, held since before the marriage, is hers alone and he has no claim to it. The remaining assets are divided equally, and the division is final."

"Equally," Randall said. "Half of everything. She earned it."

"I'd like it noted," I said, "that I didn't ask for the half."

"I know."

"Then why are you giving it?"

He looked up, and for the first time in days he looked at me with nothing arranged on his face.

"Because I put your name on a headline, and you took it back with a microphone. I'm a man who doesn't know how to pay for that." He bent and signed, hard, three times. "So I'm paying in the one thing I'm sure of."

His mother stirred.

"Give me the pen," she said.

She witnessed the last page in a firm, old-fashioned hand, and handed it back without a word.

A producer put her head around the door.
