Chapter 23: The Whole Last Scene

Danica was sitting on the edge of a lobby bench with her coat buttoned over her stomach.

She had no makeup on, and her hair was tied back with a rubber band.

She stood when she saw me, and I saw that she did not know what to do with her hands.

"I'm not here to argue," she said.

"Then why are you here?"

She held out a small flat box.

"It's the watch. The one I gave Bennett. I thought he should have the receipt, and I thought I should stop being the person who gives him things."

I took it and did not open it.

"Where is Darren?"

"Gone." She laughed, once, with no breath in it. "He emptied the account on Saturday night. He took the car. He sent me a message that said he'd been very fond of the plan."

Behind me, Philip shifted his weight, and said nothing.

"I'm not asking for anything," Danica said. "Randall won't take my calls. His mother walked past me in the hall without a word."

"What do you want from me?"

"Nothing." She swallowed. "I wanted you to know I was never kind to you. I said I was sorry in the hotel and I wasn't. I'm sorry now."

I looked at her for a long time.

She was thirty-three years old and seven months from being a mother, and she was alone in a studio lobby with a stranger's coat on.

I felt the old reflex rise in me. The one that wanted to bring her a blanket and ask if she had eaten.

It was twenty-four years deep, and I put it down.
