Chapter 7: The Kitchen
My key still worked.
The house smelled of coffee and lemon cleaner, and the kitchen light was on.
Danica Delaney stood at my sink with her sleeves pushed up, washing cherries.
She had set them out in a colander, the way I always did.
She turned off the tap when she heard me.
"Helena." She dried her hands on a towel. "Randall's upstairs, on the phone with his lawyer. I didn't think you'd come back."
"It's my house."
"I know. I'm so sorry. I'll go."
"Why are you here?"
"Darren drove me. Randall said it was safer than my apartment, with the photographers." She looked down at the colander. "I wanted to do something. I didn't know what else to wash."
She was crying, but she held her face still while she did it.
I should have been able to hate her cleanly.
I felt tired and a little embarrassed for her.
"Danica," I said. "How far along are you?"
"Fourteen weeks."
"And the due date?"
"The end of May." She said it fast. "Why?"
"I wanted to know."
I put my keys on the counter.
Randall's footsteps came down the stairs, quick and heavy.
He stopped in the doorway with his tie off and his sleeves rolled. He looked at me, then at Danica, then at the cherries.
"Go and sit in the den," he told her.
"Randall."
"Go on, love."
She went, and she touched the back of his hand as she passed.
He waited until her steps had faded.
"You came back."
