Chapter 8: The Drive

Philip's POV

The audio-video room smelled of dust and warm electronics.

The student sat at the booth computer with his hands pressed under his thighs to keep them from shaking.

"Show me again," I said.

He pulled the flash drive from his pocket and set it on the desk between us.

It was small and black, with a strip of white tape on one side.

He had written two letters on the tape in blue ink. WK.

"That's what he gave me," the student said. "Mr. Schreiber. He said to put the first file in the program and play the rest after, for a surprise."

"Did he say what the surprise was?"

"He said Mr. Alder wanted Bennett to see he was proud." His voice cracked on the word. "I didn't open the other files. I didn't check. I just dragged them into the playlist."

"You sent me the playlist on Wednesday."

"Yes, sir."

"I said it looked fine."

He nodded.

I had not told him the rest of that, and I did not tell him now.

On Wednesday afternoon I had been in a faculty meeting with a bad chair and a worse budget. His email had come in with a list of seven files.

The first was named Message for Bennett.

The last two had names that were only numbers.

I had looked at the list, thought it was a student being thorough, and written back: Looks fine.
