Chapter 4: The Aisle

I bought my wedding dress at a consignment shop on Milwaukee Avenue for two hundred and twelve dollars.

It was ivory silk with long sleeves and a plain neck.

It was the only thing in the store that didn't look like a costume, and I paid for it with the last of my own savings.

Rule four.

Romy zipped me up in the church's side room and stepped back with her hands over her mouth.

"You look like a person who owns something," she said.

"I own a dress."

"A person who owns a dress and a husband. Do not let a man in a nice coat tell you otherwise."

She wiped her eyes with the back of her wrist, and left flour on her cheek that had been there since breakfast.

I touched my mother's earrings, two small pearls she had worn on her own wedding day.

They were the only jewelry I had left that nobody could take off me.

Outside the door, the organ started.

"Ready?" Romy asked.

"No."

"Good. Nobody's ready. That's how you know it's real." She took my arm. "I'm walking you in. If a single person says one thing, I'll throw a candlestick."

"Romy, we're in a church."

"The candlesticks are brass. I checked."

The doors opened.

Saint Anselm's was full.

I had expected the Kirkbrides in the second pew.
