Chapter 13: The Fiancé's Mother
Daphne's fiancé laid the credit card statements out across my father's table.
"A wedding gown, nine thousand eight hundred," he said. "A honeymoon deposit. A spa weekend for six."
"It was for the wedding," Daphne said.
"All of it was in Veda's name."
"She's my sister. She would have said yes."
"You never asked her," he said, and his voice cracked. "You never asked anyone."
Daphne looked around the kitchen for someone to take her side.
Our father studied the tablecloth.
Our mother looked at Glenn as if he had set the whole thing up.
Behind the fiancé the front door opened again.
His mother walked in, still in her cream suit, with her car keys in her fist.
"I told him to wait in the car," she said. "He's bad at waiting."
She stopped in the doorway of the kitchen and looked at each of us.
Then she looked at me.
"You're the sister who was dying."
"I'm the sister who isn't."
"Then you'd better tell me everything," she said, "because my husband and I are paying for half of this wedding."
So I told her.
I told it standing at the table with my hand on the black binder.
