Chapter 16: The Bachelorette
The rooftop bar sat on the nineteenth floor of a downtown hotel, strung with white lights and loud with music.
Daphne's bachelorette party took up the whole east corner.
There were six women in matching pink sashes, a tower of champagne, and a banner that said LAST SPLASH.
Joan and I came up in the glass elevator at ten o'clock.
I wore the red dress and the black leather jacket.
Joan wore her vest and a pair of boots that had stood on a lot of oil.
"Ready?" she said.
"No."
"Perfect."
We crossed the roof.
A bridesmaid with a ponytail saw me first and froze with her glass in the air.
"Is that her?"
"That's the sister," someone whispered. "The one who faked it."
"I didn't fake anything," I said pleasantly. "Hi, ladies. I'm Veda. I'm here for the party."
