Chapter 17: The Call
Daphne slid down the concrete wall and put her face on her knees.
"You can't tell," she said. "She'll kill me. Veda, she'll take the car and my phone and everything."
"Go home, Daph."
"I can't go home. It's her house."
The door opened and the ponytail bridesmaid looked in.
Two of the girls helped Daphne up and took her down in the elevator.
I stood in the stairwell shaking from my wrists to my teeth.
On Sunday night I sat in Glenn's office with my boots on his desk.
The shop floor was dark below the window, and the forty trucks were asleep.
I had told Glenn everything at one in the morning, and he had called the chief of staff at Miami Valley before breakfast.
At eight o'clock his computer chimed, and a PDF opened from the hospital's patient office.
He printed it without a word.
The paper had three lines on it, in a gray table.
Friday, 4:52 p.m. Outbound call to emergency contact, Margaret Prewitt. Result of imaging disclosed. Eleven minutes.
