Chapter 17: Ninety Seconds
Celia woke in her childhood bedroom with the door locked from the outside.
The window was painted shut.
Her phone was gone, her laptop was gone, and a nurse she had never met sat in the chair by the bed doing a crossword.
She had been in the house for two days.
She was frightened for the baby, and under that she was angrier than she had ever been in her life.
The nurse took her blood pressure at nine and wrote the number down.
At ten her father came in with a lawyer and a physician she had never met.
He sat at the foot of the bed with his hands folded.
"You've had a bad week," he said. "You've been unwell and impulsive, and you've embarrassed this company in front of a thousand cameras."
"I've told the truth in front of a thousand cameras."
"This doctor will say you are not fit to make decisions in this condition."
The physician looked at the floor.
The lawyer laid three documents on the blanket.
"A medical leave," her father said. "A trustee to hold your shares until the child is born. And a guardianship transfer, effective at birth. A Wainright child will be raised by its family."
"Its family is me."
"Its family is the one that can protect it. You've run to a boy with no money and no name, and he fights for cash in a basement." He sounded almost sad. "The board votes Monday. I will have the votes."
"You won't have Giselle's."
"Giselle does what she's told."
"She didn't, yesterday. She went to him."
Her father's face did not change, but his hands tightened.
