Chapter 18: No Terms
By nine that night the gray sedan was gone from the lot, and Troy did not trust it.
He checked the lock twice and the windows once, and then Molly took the dish towel out of his hand.
"They're gone," she said. "You looked for an hour."
"They'll be back."
"Then they'll be back." She hung the towel on the oven door. "Sit down. I want to ask you something, and I want you to answer it with no tricks."
He sat on the couch.
She sat beside him, turned sideways, with her knees against his thigh.
"The baby," she said. "When it's born, you'll go to that house. Her family, her life. Every Sunday, every holiday. You'll be a father there, and I'll be the girl you used to sleep with."
"No."
"You can't promise that."
"I can." He took her hand and held it in both of his. "I'm not going back for the child, Molly. I'm going to the child. That is a different road, and it ends at your door every night."
Her eyes were bright.
"You mean that?"
"I mean it more than my own name." He lifted her hand and kissed the inside of her wrist. "I stood at that altar for eight years waiting for someone to choose me. You chose me with a frying pan and a bag of frozen peas."
She laughed through her nose, close to tears.
"You were choosing me too," she said. "You just didn't know it."
"I knew it in the hallway."
"Liar."
"I knew it when you told me to take my shirt off."
She was in his lap before he finished the sentence.
She kissed him with her whole body, and he pulled her closer, one hand spread at her back and the other buried in her hair.
