Chapter 14: The Kitchen
On Sunday I told Calvin where to put the skiff, and he did not ask me why.
"Off the point, three hundred yards out, engine off," I said. "If you see me on the dock, you wait."
"Until?"
"Until I reach the boat. You hold it steady and you don't touch me."
"I know the rule," said Calvin. "I just don't have to like it."
The key turned in the back door on the first try.
I pulled the door toward me, the way she had said, and it came open without a sound.
My mother was standing at the stove.
She wore a gray cardigan and slippers, and her silver hair hung in a plait over one shoulder.
I had not seen her hair down since my father's funeral.
"Sit, Gillie," she said, without turning around.
I had been Faith Coleman for eighteen months, and in one word she took it off me.
I sat at the kitchen table where I had done my homework.
The same scorched mark was on the pine, from a pan I had dropped at eleven.
