I went down to the dock at six, when the lake was the color of pewter and the mist stood on it in rags.
The boards were wet under my bare feet.
I wore the black racing suit I had found in the bottom of my old dresser, my hair wet-cropped and my grandmother's pearls left on the kitchen table.
The envelope lay in my hand, thick and cream and sealed.
I had not slept much, and I had not opened it.
I stood at the end of the dock, above the third piling, and looked at the single word on the front.
I knew my mother's capitals better than I knew my own hand.
I could have read it in a minute.
She would have written something very good, I thought.
She had always known how to write the sentence that makes you feel the room tilt, and what she wanted for it.
I knelt and set the envelope on the water.
