Chapter 15: The Distributor
Cassandra's POV
I did not sleep Tuesday night, and on Wednesday morning I walked into the Southeast Gift & Home Market with a banker's box on my hip and three women behind me.
The trade floor filled the old cotton exchange on Bay Street.
Four hundred booths, five hundred buyers, and a banner over the entrance with the distributor's name and the Sayre Holdings logo in smaller type underneath.
I had never noticed the smaller type.
Hattie walked ahead with her phone up and the red light on.
"Forty-one thousand watching," she murmured. "They think we're doing a shop tour."
"Good."
The distributor's owner stood in the center aisle in a navy blazer, shaking hands with a buyer from a chain in Tampa.
He was sixty, round-faced, and he had once sent me a fruit basket for hitting a quarterly number.
He saw me and kept smiling, but his eyes went to the box.
"Cassandra," he said. "This is a trade floor. Maybe we do this in my office."
"I'd rather do it here."
The buyer from Tampa took a step back, which was the right call.
I set the box on the nearest display table and took out the purchase sheet.
I held it up where the people closest could read the heading.
"This is a Sayre Holdings purchase sheet," I said. "It's dated eleven months ago."
"That is a confidential document."
"Behind it is your agreement with them. It says you cancel any account Sayre tells you to cancel, within one business day, with no reason given." I turned the page. "It says you get a loan from them at four percent, and you pay it back in cancelled accounts."
