Chapter 20: On Every Count
The jury was out for two hours.
I waited in the corridor with my father on one side and Hester on the other, and none of us talked.
At four o'clock the bailiff opened the door.
The courtroom was packed to the walls. The Westridge wolves had come in coats and stood three deep at the back.
Odette stood when the foreman stood. Her hands were folded in front of her, and she held them very tightly.
"On every count," the foreman said, "guilty."
Odette's mother cried out.
Odette did not move. She was looking, not at the jury, but at the third row.
Kellan had not looked up.
The judge waited for the room to settle.
"Before I sentence," she said, "the court has a request from one more defendant. Mr. Ashgrove's counsel asked to be heard."
Kellan stood.
His lawyer put a hand on his arm, and he moved it away.
"Your Honor," he said. "I'm not asking for anything. I want to enter my plea."
"Mr. Ashgrove, you've been advised that a plea can be made through counsel."
"I know. I want to say it myself."
He faced the room. He did not look at the pack or at his mother.
He looked at me.
"I am guilty on every count that names me," Kellan said. "Endangering her life, in all eleven games. Imprisoning her at the funeral home. Reckless harm in the fountain."
"I didn't plan the freezer, but I walked into the kitchen and let the door stay shut."
"I knew the first time that it could kill her. I kept going."
