Chapter 15: On His Knees
I went to the bar at nine, and I did not go alone.
Rafe stood at the lobby door with his hands in his pockets, and I walked in past him without a word.
That was the deal we had made in the taxi.
He would watch, and I would handle it.
The Harbor Hotel bar was full.
It was a Thursday, and the staff had told every regular that the Kingsbury heir was meeting someone.
Phones were already up when I came through the door.
Brooks sat alone at the long counter with an untouched drink in front of him.
His tie was crooked.
He had not slept either.
He saw me and slid off the stool.
"Sylvie."
"You said alone."
"I meant it."
"There are forty people in here."
"I know," he said. "I need them to see this."
He walked up to me, and then, in front of the whole bar, he went down on both knees on the marble floor.
Someone gasped.
A bartender stopped pouring.
"I was wrong," Brooks said, loud enough to carry. "I was a coward. I put you on a screen and called it love, and I've been sick about it every day since."
"Get up."
"Not until you listen."
"I've listened to you for a year."
"Then listen to me for one more minute." His voice cracked. "I'll say it in front of anyone. I'll say it on the news. I'll apologize on every channel in the city. Just give me the thirtieth."
There it was.
I had wondered how long he could keep it dressed up.
"The thirtieth," I said.
"A month. Sixty days. Whatever you want. You hold the paper, you can give us more time." He caught my hand. "My father will make it right. We'll give your father a seat on the board. We'll give you the Harbor Hotel, I swear."
