Chapter 22: The Thirtieth
On the thirtieth, at ten in the morning, the Kingsburys came to Stanton Lane Capital to lose.
The conference room on the fortieth floor had the same long table and the same view of the harbor.
I sat at the head of it.
Rafe had put me there himself, and then sat down at my right hand, and said nothing.
My father sat on my left, in his party suit, with a folder of his own.
His land had closed at eight that morning, for nine million dollars, and the money had gone straight into the account I had opened for this table.
I had paid Rafe his note at nine o'clock that morning.
I had signed every page myself.
Brooks's father came in first, alone, without a lawyer.
He had shaved and wore a plain gray suit, and I saw him look once at the view and then not again.
He sat down opposite me.
"Ms. Tarrant."
"Mr. Kingsbury."
Brooks came in next.
He was thinner.
Security had held him in a room for six hours that night, and the district attorney's office had a file on his name, and a grand jury was waiting for his assistant to explain a signature.
He did not look at me.
He sat beside his father with his hands under the table.
The last one to arrive was his mother.
She came through the door in black, with her pearls on, and stopped at the end of the table.
"I will not sign," she said.
"You don't have to," I said. "Your husband signs for the company."
"He has resigned."
"His resignation takes effect after the close. He's still the chairman until the pen goes down."
Her mouth opened and closed.
Behind her, a lawyer in a gray suit said, quietly, "She's right."
Brooks's mother sat.
She sat stiffly, with her bag in her lap.
Rafe's lawyer slid the papers across.
