Chapter 24: The Woman He Couldn't Afford

I looked at the six rings for a long time.

There was a diamond the size of a thumbnail, and an emerald, and a sapphire, and a pearl in an old gold setting.

There was a plain band with a small gray stone.

The gray stone was the same color as his eyes.

"You didn't buy these today," I said.

"I bought the first one the morning after your engagement party."

"Which?"

He touched the plain band.

"I had no right," he said. "I carried it around anyway. The others I added when I thought you might want something loud."

"Why six?"

"Because I wanted you to choose."

I thought of a ballroom where I had been given no choice at all.

I thought of a screen, and a pen, and the word provided.

I took out the plain band.

It was heavier than it looked.

"This one," I said.

He let out a breath.

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure about the ring. I'm not done."

I put it on my right hand, and then took it off and held it out to him.

"Ask me properly."

"Here? Like this?"

"Like this."

He pulled on his shirt without buttoning it, and he knelt on the carpet of the Harbor Hotel's top suite, with the city lit below.

He did not do it with a speech.

"Sylvie Tarrant," he said. "I am thirty-six years old, and I have never wanted anything I wasn't willing to take. I want you. Marry me, if you'll have me."

"I will."

"With conditions?"
