Chapter 21: Wyatt's POV

Wyatt's POV

Deanna had the phone in both hands, and I watched the little screen over her shoulder.

On it Gavin stood on Peg's porch in his charcoal overcoat, with a folded paper in his fist.

He knocked again.

A light came on behind the glass, and then a voice came out of the doorbell, tinny and entirely calm.

"Gavin Hallstrom, I'm in my robe."

"Peg." He put on the smile. "I need five minutes. This is about the trust."

"It's ten at night. Come back at nine tomorrow, when the Women's League gets here for the bake sale meeting. Bring your lawyer, if he's still speaking to you."

"Peg, please."

"Good night, Gavin."

The light went off.

He stood there a long moment on the empty porch, and then he walked back to his car without hurrying.

"I'm going," Deanna said, and reached for the door of the Volvo.

"It's two and a half hours in the dark, and you haven't slept."

"She's alone."

"She has a doorbell, a cast-iron pan and a dozen women with casseroles coming at nine," I said. "She told you to come in the morning."

Her phone buzzed in her hand.

It was Peg: Stay put. Eat something. I mean it.

Deanna put her forehead against the window and laughed, shakily, and then didn't laugh.

I drove us to the lake.

I lit the stove, and she stood in the kitchen with her coat still on, and I took an envelope from the inside pocket of mine.

I had signed it Wednesday night, before the dinner.

I put it on the counter between us.

"What is that?"

"My twenty-five percent," I said. "It goes into your trust. It's yours as of tomorrow morning."
