Chapter 9: The Notebook

I waited until the baby slept and the warehouse had gone quiet.

Then I walked into the pantry and said, "Come in here, please."

Nolan came in and shut the door behind him.

The pantry is a narrow room off the kitchen, with metal shelves on both sides and one bulb on a string.

"What does priority mean?" I asked.

"I don't know all of it."

"That is not what I asked."

"I know what it means to the people who sent me." He kept his voice even. "They sent me to bring you in."

I had known. I had known since the grey coats at my gate.

It still landed in the middle of my chest.

"You were never hired by my mother," I said.

"She hired me. They told me to take the job."

"Who is they?"

"The program at Calder. I did their retrieval work for two years." He did not look away. "I was told your name and an address. I was told you were a protected person."

"Protected from what?"

"I was given the first page of your file, and the first page said you were treated at six years old." He said it carefully. "That's all it said."

"Treated for what?"

"I don't know."

I believed that. It was the one thing in his face I believed.

The rest of me had gone white-hot and quiet.

"You sat at table six," I said.

"Yes."

"You had a notebook. You wrote in it while Troy read my bank statements to forty people."

"Yes."

"You watched them hand me a bag with my birth certificate in it, and you watched my mother cry, and you didn't stand up."
