Chapter 10: Terms

"Let go first," Declan said. "Then I'll tell you all of it, and you can do what you want."

I looked down.

My fist was still in his collar, and my knuckles had gone white.

I let go.

He didn't straighten his shirt.

He stood very still in the cramped office and told me, in the flattest voice I'd ever heard him use, everything he had known.

It took four minutes, and I didn't interrupt once.

"So Garrison has been holding my name over your head," I said.

"Over both of us." His jaw worked. "And over my grandmother. She still thinks the company is hers."

"So you told me we were strangers."

"I thought you were safer if you hated me for a few days than if you knew."

"He filed anyway."

"On Friday. Under a power of attorney I signed in Reno, the same morning I signed the annulment. I revoked it in writing on Saturday."

"You gave him a power of attorney."

"I was twenty minutes from being the happiest idiot alive and I signed whatever he put in front of me." He took a breath. "I'd read the first page. I didn't read the second."

"You had thirteen days."

"I know."

"You could have knocked on my door on the first night and said it."

"I knew you'd leave."

"Of course I'd leave!" My voice cracked off the thin walls. "I'd have left the second you told me. I'd have walked out and got a lawyer. That's what a person does when she finds out she's been lied to for fourteen months."
