Chapter 6: The Offer
On Monday morning the Draycott lawyer's assistant called and asked me to come in at ten.
She said it was "a courtesy."
I went because I wanted to look at his face in daylight.
The office was on the thirty-first floor of the Draycott Development tower, with a view of the river and the half-built Ashworth tower I had walked away from.
The thin man sat behind a glass desk with his leather folder squared in front of him.
"Ms. MacAuley," he said. "Please. Sit."
I sat in the chair that was too low.
It put my eyes at the level of his tie.
"On behalf of Mr. Draycott," he said, "I'd like to offer you a settlement."
He opened the folder and turned a single sheet around.
It said two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Below that was a paragraph in gentle legal language, and in the middle of it a phrase I read twice.
"'Any prior personal relationship with Mr. Declan Ashworth,'" I read aloud.
"Yes."
"What prior personal relationship?"
"The agreement is simply protective, Ms. MacAuley. It prevents confusion in the press." He smiled very slightly. "Rumors are corrosive."
"What rumors?"
"The kind that attach themselves to a brave young woman and a wealthy man. People will say anything."
"I'd like you to say which one you mean."
"I wouldn't wish to put words in anyone's mouth."
He had an even, soft voice, and he was good at it.
I put my good hand flat on the paper.
"You were in Reno," I said.
His smile did not change, but his pen stopped moving.
"Fourteen months ago," I said. "At the Silver Crown hotel. You drew up the papers Declan and I signed that noon. You were the Ashworths' lawyer."
