Chapter 8: The Folder

Declan's POV

Camille poured wine into two paper cups from the trailer's coffee station and asked Hallie if she wanted one.

Hallie said no, thank you, and picked up her bag, and Camille said how sweet it was that we'd all been working so late.

She never once asked what we were doing there.

That was how I knew she'd known before she arrived.

"I have the app on both our phones, darling," she said in the car afterward, as if it were a joke. "It's what engaged couples do."

Bea's truck had already pulled up for Hallie, and I watched its taillights go, and then I let Camille drive me to the penthouse.

The moment the doors closed behind her, I went into the study, locked it, and took the folder out of the safe.

I had read the first page forty times.

It was a certified copy of a marriage certificate from Washoe County, Nevada.

Hallie Marie MacAuley and Declan James Ashworth, at 2:14 a.m., in the Little Silver Chapel.

Below it, stapled on, was a clerk's note dated nine days ago.

*No record of dissolution or annulment on file.*

I had been married to her for fourteen months.

I had found out on a Wednesday, in a conference room on the thirty-first floor of the Draycott tower.

Garrison Draycott had poured me a coffee himself.

His lawyer had slid the folder across the table, and Garrison had said, in the pleasant voice of a man discussing a lease, "Your annulment wasn't filed, Declan. I asked him to hold it."

"There are two ways this goes," Garrison had said. "You marry my daughter on the fifteenth, as you've agreed, and Ms. MacAuley signs a quiet divorce and a statement. She says she tricked a drunk man in a chapel to get ahead at his company."
