Chapter 16: Charm
Solène was on her feet before he reached the second step.
"Get back in your car."
"Sweetheart." He held the peonies out in front of him like a shield. "I drove nine hours. I came to apologize to your grandmother. Not to you. To her."
Julien put down his knife.
He stood up very slowly.
"Julien," his grandmother said. "Sit."
He didn't sit. But he didn't move either.
The old woman looked down the steps at Ashton for a long time.
He smiled up at her.
He'd found white peonies in April.
I wondered what they'd cost him, and whose money it was.
"Monsieur Trask," she said. "It's late, and we are eating. Come back tomorrow at three. I serve tea at three."
"Grand-mère!"
"Three o'clock," the old woman said. "Leave the flowers on the step."
He laid them on the stone like an offering.
He blew Solène a kiss.
Then he drove away down the hill.
Solène didn't speak to her grandmother for the rest of the night.
She came to my room instead, at midnight, and lay on the end of my bed in her nightgown and stared at the beams.
