Chapter 6: Sister

"Solène," Julien said.

She set the bakery box down on the counter very gently.

"Fourteen million."

"Let me explain."

"Fourteen million euros, Julien."

"I was going to tell you."

"When?" Her voice went up an octave and into French. I caught one word in four. Papa. Bank. Liar.

Julien answered in French, low and fast.

She answered in English, so I'd understand, I think. So I'd be a witness.

"You let me plan a wedding. You let me book the town hall. You let me pick flowers for a gala in a house that's going to be gone in June!"

"That's why I didn't tell you!"

"Because I'm a child?"

"Because you were happy!"

"Don't you dare." She jabbed a finger at him. "Don't you dare make this about protecting me. You didn't tell me because you think I can't do arithmetic."

"I think you trust people who don't deserve it."

"Like who?"

He didn't say it.

He didn't have to. She looked at me.

"Oh. Like Ashton. And you've decided that from one meeting with her."

"He's selling the house, Solène. He was in her office this morning with a brochure."

"He's trying to save it!" She was shouting now. "He told me last month he had a buyer who'd keep the name alive. He said it would solve everything. I thought he meant some little investor. I thought he was being sweet."

"He gets four percent," I said.

They both turned on me.

"Stay out of this," they said at the same time.

I closed my mouth.

"You knew," Solène said to her brother. "You knew the house was dying and you let me think I had a dowry. Do you know what he said when he proposed? He said, 'I'd marry you if you had nothing.' And I believed it. And now I find out I do have nothing, from her."
