Chapter 7: Repeat Customer

"Yes," I said. "Mine came from the same jeweler. The New York store. He bought them in June."

Solène folded the receipt back up, very neatly.

"So I'm a repeat customer," she said. "That's what I am."

"We both are."

She laughed.

It came out wrong, half a sob. Then it came out right, and she couldn't stop.

I started laughing too, and I didn't know why, and we sat on her family's bench at eleven at night and laughed until she had to wipe her eyes with the back of her wrist.

"Tomorrow," she said. "Nine o'clock. The café on the Madeleine with the green awnings. Bring the phone."

The café on the Place de la Madeleine had tiny round tables and waiters who looked offended by the morning.

Solène was already there when I arrived. Dark glasses. No lipstick. A notebook open in front of her.

She'd made columns.

"Sit," she said. "I've been up since five. I need to know everything."

"Everything?"

"Everything he said to you that he also said to me. Line by line." She uncapped a pen. "We'll start with the first date."

"A hotel bar in Midtown. He ordered me a gin and tonic without asking."

She wrote it down.

"He ordered me a kir royale without asking. At the Ritz bar. What did he say?"

"He said I had a laugh like a bell."

Her pen stopped.

"A bell," she said. "Like a church bell in a small town."

"Yes. Exactly that."

"He said it to me in September."

She wrote it down. She underlined it twice.

"Next."

"He said I was the only person who ever really saw him."

"Me too. Second date."

"He told me about his father."

Solène put her pen down.

"The sailing accident."

"No," I said. "Heart attack. On the tennis court, when Ashton was fourteen. He held his hand on the clay while they waited for the ambulance."
