Chapter 18: The Reading
June's POV
I shifted back with my knees in the dirt and my hand fisted in Lachlan's fur.
Someone threw a coat over my shoulders.
It was Pearl, and she did not let go of my arm.
Mirabel stood in the middle of the ring with the envelope in both hands.
Cade stared at her, stunned and uncomprehending.
"Mira," he said, with a short laugh. "What are you doing, baby? Go home."
"No."
"You're upset. She's upset," Cade told the crowd. "It's the baby. Mother, take her home."
His mother rose from the elders' table.
"Step away from the ring, girl," she said. "You have no standing here."
"I have this," said Mirabel.
She tore the envelope open and unfolded the page.
Her voice shook so badly that the first line came out in pieces.
"To Cade Brannigan, from the Alpha of the Eastern pack," she read. "I have considered your proposal."
The grey-haired man by the fire went rigid.
She skipped the greetings and read the line that mattered.
"I understand that your uncle's wolf will fail at the fortieth year and that the matter will resolve itself."
A sound moved through the pack.
"Mirabel," Cade said sharply. "Stop."
She read on.
"I also understand you have found a way to keep your uncle's mate silent until that day. I do not need to know what it is. I ask only that the girl be gone before my daughter arrives."
"Where is the date?" an elder called. "Read the date."
"Six months ago," Mirabel said. "Before I was pregnant. Before he ever told me I would be Luna. He was promised the Eastern Alpha's daughter the day he took the seat."
She dropped the page.
