Chapter 10: Anneliese's POV

Anneliese's POV

I wasn't taken, and I wasn't hurt.

I was across town in Fitz's kitchen, eating soup and arguing with him about my father's letter, when the girl from the counter called to say the window was broken.

Fitz drove me to Fillmore with his cap jammed on his head.

Dominic was already there.

He stood in the middle of the broken glass with my apron in his fist, shouting my name into the dark shop.

"Anneliese!"

"I'm here," I said from the door.

He turned.

I have never seen a face change like that.

The fear went out of it first, and then relief came in, so hard that he had to take a breath.

He crossed the floor in three steps and stopped an arm's length away.

He didn't touch me.

His hands came up and hung in the air and went back down.

"Where were you?"

"At Fitz's, eating soup. The shop closes at six."

"You didn't answer your phone."

"It was in my coat. Who did this?"

"I called every man on the Coast." He swallowed. "I thought..."

"You thought what?"

He didn't finish.

A brick sat on the floor under the counter with a piece of paper wrapped around it.

I picked up the paper and read the four words printed on it.

"Sell it before Friday."

"That's not a threat to the shop," Fitz said, reading over my shoulder. "That's a threat to the seat."
