Chapter 11: The Table
By Wednesday evening, every captain on the Coast was in Nolan Hall.
They sat at the long tables in their dark coats, twenty-one men with their hands on the wood.
I sat in my father's chair with a bandage on my palm and Fitz at my left shoulder.
Dominic stood behind me.
I couldn't see him, but I knew exactly where he was.
Bruno Pace sat at the middle table, and next to him, in a black dress, sat Gia Falcone.
She had her hair up. She was smiling at nobody.
"We're all friends here," Pace said, once the room was quiet. "So I'll say what everyone is thinking. Mrs. Ventresca is a baker. She learned on Monday that she has a seat. I mean no disrespect. But the Coast can't run on a woman's mood."
"Mine?" I said.
"A marriage in trouble. A husband in the doghouse. A seat that may be vacant by Friday." He spread his rings on the table. "I'd say the men deserve a steady hand."
A few captains nodded.
"Your guest," I said, and I looked at Gia. "Please stand, Miss Falcone."
She glanced at Pace.
He gave her nothing.
She stood.
"You were in my house on Friday morning," I said. "You wore my robe, drank from my cup, and told my guards they worked for my husband and not for me."
"I apologized for that."
"You did. Now I'd like to ask you one question in front of everyone here. You can lie, and I'll know."
Somebody coughed.
"On Monday night, my husband went to your club to end it. You told him you weren't the only one who'd been talking to Bruno Pace."
Gia's smile slipped.
"Dominic," I said. "Tell the table what she said."
