Chapter 10: At the Door

Cillian's POV

I told myself I was only bringing groceries.

It was Thursday night, nine o'clock, and I stood outside the carriage house with a paper bag in one arm, eggs, bread, a carton of soup from the place on Walnut Street.

I had broken my own second rule within a day of making it.

She opened the door before I knocked.

She wore a gray sweater and jeans, and her hair was down. I had only ever seen it pinned up under a cap.

The gauze on her palm was clean.

"You're not supposed to feed me," she said. "That's rule two."

"Rule two is that you don't owe me. I'm not asking you to owe me. The soup was on sale."

"It was not on sale."

"It was spiritually on sale."

She laughed, once, in the back of her throat, and I liked it more than I should have.

I went in and put the bag on the counter.

It was the first time I had seen the room with someone living in it.

Her scrubs hung from the easel. A pair of her shoes sat by the door. A mug of tea had gone cold on the windowsill.

She had put a photograph of an old woman on the shelf, a white-haired woman holding a hose over a garden.

"That's your grandmother," I said.

"That's her."

She didn't say more.

I made myself say the rest of it.

"Hannah, I was at the steakhouse across from the hospital last Friday night. Your husband was in a booth with his boss and Shelby. I wasn't looking for him. I just saw him."
