After My Miscarriage, My Husband Locked Me Out novel · Chapter 12 of 24
Chapter 12: The Closing
On Friday at six o'clock I rang my own doorbell.
Roz stood on my left with her coat buttoned to the chin.
Her husband stood on my right, carrying a thin leather case under his arm.
At the end of the drive, parked under the streetlight with the engine off, was Cillian's car.
He had said he'd be outside, and he was.
The cars along the street were the same ones as two weeks ago.
I knew the neighbors by their windows, and every window was lit.
Chandler opened the door.
He wore a gray suit and a new tie, and he was smiling, because there were people behind him.
"Hannah. You made it."
"I'm here to sign."
"Wonderful." He looked past me at Roz and her husband. "Just you, though. This is a private family matter."
"You told me everyone," I said. "I asked for everyone. They're witnesses."
Behind him, Gwendolyn's voice came down the hall.
"Let them in, Chandler. It's only polite."
He stepped aside.
I walked into my house for the first time in two weeks.
The living room had been rearranged.
My grandmother's rug was gone, and in its place stood a long folding table with a white cloth, a vase of white lilies and a single pen set parallel to a stack of paper.
Along the walls stood most of the same crowd.
His boss with a drink.
Two neighbors.
A man and a woman in matching navy coats, who I guessed were the buyers.
Gwendolyn in her pearls.
Shelby, in a chair by the window with her hand on her belly, who would not meet my eyes.
At the head of the table sat a woman with reading glasses and a laptop, who stood and shook my hand.
