Chapter 6: The Folder

The bank envelope was still in my bag.

I had pulled it out of the mailbox on Friday night, and it had ridden under my arm with the plastic bag and my bracelet, and I had not once thought about it since.

On Thursday morning I sat on Roz's pull-out couch with it in my lap.

It was from the lender, the same kind of letter that had come every January for six years.

I had always filed them in the grey cabinet in the dining room without reading them.

Chandler had never asked what was in them.

He used to say, "Mortgage is your department, babe. I'm the big picture."

I tore it open.

The first page was an annual escrow statement.

At the top, under Property Address, was our house on Linden Street.

Under it was a line that said Borrower.

Hannah M. Birkett.

Only that. No second name. No Chandler.

I read the line four times.

I had said to Roz's husband on Monday that I would have to go and look at the deed.

I didn't have to go far.

After the wedding Chandler had said, very kindly, "We should put my name on the deed. Leave it with me."

I had left it with him.

I got dressed.

Roz was at the sink, rinsing her mug.

"I'm going to the credit union," I said. "Grandma's safe deposit box. Will you drive me?"

"Why?"

"I need to see what's in it."

The woman at the credit union brought the long steel box into a little room and left me alone with it.
