Chapter 8: Back on Shift

Hannah's POV

The audit came back clean on Monday, and by Tuesday I was back on the floor.

The nurse manager shook my hand and did not look at me.

Nobody mentioned the video again, but three different people brought me coffee.

At four in the afternoon the ambulance doors banged open, and Chandler came through them holding Shelby up by the elbow.

She was pale and bent forward at the waist.

There was blood on the leg of her pale trousers.

"Somebody help her!" Chandler shouted. "She's eighteen weeks, she's bleeding, I need a doctor right now."

Roz was at the desk. She looked at me over her glasses and waited for me to decide.

Every other nurse on the floor was in a room with a patient.

"Bay four," I said. "I'll take her."

"You can't," Chandler said, as soon as he saw me. "Not her. Get somebody else."

"There isn't anyone else," Roz said.

"That is a conflict of interest. I'll file a complaint."

"File it," Roz said. "She's the nurse."

I took Shelby's other arm.

She looked at me with her wet, frightened eyes and said, "Hannah, I'm so sorry."

"Sit down, Shelby," I said. "Breathe through it."

I got her into the bed and I put the cuff on her arm and the monitor on her belly, because that is what you do.
