Chapter 11: The Doctor

Cora's POV

The family doctor's office was on Water Street, over a bakery.

By nine on Wednesday morning, the whole stairwell smelled of cinnamon.

I climbed it with Cliff behind me, in uniform this time, with his hat in his hand.

"You can say no to this," he said.

"I'm not saying no."

"Then I'll stand by the door and look official."

"You're very good at it."

"I'm told I have a gift."

The doctor sat behind his desk in a gray cardigan, reading glasses on his nose.

He was sixty or so, soft in the face.

When I walked in, the glasses came off and he stood up so fast that his chair rolled back into the wall.

"Cora. Mrs. Fjelstad. I didn't know we had an appointment."

"We don't."

Cliff shut the door and stood in front of it.

The doctor looked at the badge.

"Deputy. Is this about the dinner? I want to say I regret my part in that. It was never my intention."

"Did you examine me?" I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"Last year. The year before. Any year." I set the orange pill bottle on his blotter. "Did you ever examine me, or take my history, or look at my chart before you wrote this?"

He looked at the bottle.

His face went the color of paper.

"Signe explained that you were reluctant to come in," he said. "She said the family was concerned. You were having episodes. Anders had asked her to handle it."

"Anders asked her."

"She showed me his messages."

"Show me."

The doctor hesitated.

Then he opened a drawer, took out a manila folder, and slid a printed page across the desk.

It was a text exchange, in a bubble.
