Chapter 19: You Took the Table

"Don't make that face," Signe said. "It's just wine."

She came in past me and set the bottle on my grandmother's oilcloth, as she had set a hundred things on my table.

I closed the door.

My phone was in the pocket of my cardigan.

I put my hand over it, and my thumb found the red circle and pressed.

"It's two in the morning," I said.

"I couldn't sleep." She took two glasses from the shelf without asking where they were. "I thought we should talk, you and I. Woman to woman. Before Saturday makes everything ugly."

"I don't drink. I'm pregnant."

"Oh, I know."

She poured one glass anyway, and sat down, and crossed her legs.

"How do you know?" I said.

"I followed you to Lakeview, honey. Twice. I saw you come out of the second visit with a little paper bag of vitamins and your hand on your stomach."

She said it kindly, as she said everything.

"Why did you follow me?"

"Because Anders would have been so happy." Her smile held. "And I couldn't have that."

The kitchen was very quiet.

I stayed standing by the door, where the phone could hear her.

"You wrote the ledger," I said.

"Of course I did. Every line." She lifted the glass and admired the color. "Do you know how long it took? You'd be amazed what you can learn about a person from her recycling."

"The pills."

"That doctor has never read a chart in his life. He signs what I put in front of him." She sipped. "I increased the dose in year three. You were so much easier after."
