Chapter 4: The Coat

I took the coat from him because it was cold and it was mine.

Anders's hand stayed in the air a moment after I had taken it.

"You followed me last night," I said.

"I sat in the truck."

"All night."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you come up?"

He looked at the pharmacy door behind me and then at the bag in my hand.

"Because you wouldn't have opened it."

That was true, and I hated it.

"What do you want, Anders?"

"Take nothing she gives you."

He said it low, and he said it fast.

"Not food. Not a drink. Not a pill."

I kept my face still.

I had practiced that in the bathroom, and it was easier than I had thought.

"Who?" I said.

He looked at me.

For one second I saw something move in his face, and then it was gone.

"Please," he said.

"Please what? Explain it."

"I can't yet."

"You can't yet." I shook out the coat and put my arms into it. "You stood in a room full of people and told me I was a liar who needed drugs. You can't explain that?"

"No."

"Then you don't get to tell me what to take."

He stepped closer.

I smelled cedar shavings and the cold on his jacket.

He reached out, slowly, and turned up the collar of my coat where it had folded under.

His fingers brushed my neck.

They were rough and warm, and they were shaking.
