Chapter 16: Next Door

Emerson looked at the poster of himself.

Then he looked into Trina's phone.

"No," he said.

Trina laughed, bright and easy, for her followers.

"He's shy, you guys."

"I'm not shy." He stepped closer to the camera. "I ate this plan on camera. I have a genetic disease. This diet nearly killed me. Take my face off it."

Trina's smile stayed exactly where it was.

"Babe," she said softly. "You can't. Your mother signed the license in January. The Reset is my brand. The product line, the challenge, the relaunch. It's in the contract."

"Then keep your brand," Emerson said. "But not my name, and not my face. Take that down."

The two men holding the poster looked at each other.

"Down," Emerson said.

They laid it face down on the white stone.

Trina turned the phone back to herself.

"Okay! Big changes, big energy!" she told her followers. "The Reset is bigger than one man. See you all at the relaunch!"

She walked past me close enough that I smelled her perfume.

"Nice try, cook," she said, under the camera's hearing.

That night I sat in the back booth with a ginger ale and Fergus across from me.

The Thursday sign-up placemats were stacked by my elbow, thirty-one names deep.

"I want the clinic back," I said. "On Thursdays. But not in your diner."

"Okay."

"I want it legal. A real room. A sink, an exam table, a fridge for formula, a door with my license on it. And I want to do it with you, not around you."

He set down his coffee.

"Are you asking me?"

"I'm asking you."

He looked at me for so long that I started to worry.

Then he grinned, slow and wide, the beard lifting.

"Doc," he said. "Have you looked out the side window lately?"
