Chapter 20: No Partnership

I read the fax twice.

"What's August fourteenth?"

"A day I have to be very good in front of a judge," I said.

"You're always good."

"Very good."

"I'll draw you a picture for the judge."

Fergus turned off the stove.

He sat down at the table beside me, in the third mismatched chair, and put his hand flat on the fax.

"Together," he said.

"Together."

My lawyer came to the Kitchen that afternoon with a bag of sunflower seeds and a legal pad.

He sat on the exam table and made a list.

"The judge wants to see a life," he said. "Not a fight. A life. Job?"

"Fellowship. Second year. Tuesday clinic with a waiting list."

"Letter from your boss."

"She already wrote one. Two pages."

"Home?"

I hesitated.

"A room across the street. Six hundred a month. No men after ten."

"Unless it's him," Fergus said from the doorway.

My lawyer looked from me to Fergus and back.

"I'm not going to ask," he said. "I'm going to write down 'stable household, strong community'. Clinic?"

I looked around the white room.

The two fish in Ciara's tank. The crab. The shelf of unclaimed shoes with their paper tags.

"This," I said.

"This is good," he said. "Judges like a shelf of old shoes. It's folksy."

On Thursday the young father came.

He came at seven with the baby in a carrier on his chest, and he waited in line.

Ciara wrote him down as number nine.

"What makes you sick?" she asked him.

"Steak," he said.

Ciara nodded wisely.

"Me too. Not steak. Fruit. Sit there."

His kidney numbers were better than I'd feared and worse than I wanted.

I told him so and wrote him a plan.

Then he said, "I'll talk."

I put down my pen.

"The NDA..."

"I know what it says." He looked down at his daughter. "I keep thinking about her being sixteen and reading about it. That her dad took thirty grand and kept his mouth shut while they put it on more people. I don't want to be that guy."
