Chapter 13: The Key That Doesn't Sound

Etienne's POV

I left my wife asleep at five in the morning and drove to St. Brigid's.

I had not slept at all.

For nine years my sister had told one story about that hospital, and I had heard it at every dinner.

Delphine at a bandaged boy's bed, playing the piano down the hall every night until he mended.

Hazel had just told me the same piano, the same nights, the same boy.

Only the girl was different.

I stood in the hospital lobby while the sun came up and made myself say it plainly.

Either two women had played the same nocturne in the same lounge for the same blind boy, or my sister had been lying for nine years.

I had suspected the second for months.

I had never asked, because I did not want to know what I would do about it.

The volunteer at the front desk was a small, brisk woman in her seventies with a lanyard and a cardigan.

"Ward Six, nine years ago," I said. "Who would remember it?"

"Me," she said. "I ran that ward for twenty-two years."

She looked at me properly and her mouth went thin.

"You're a Marchand. You have the chin."

"I'm Delphine Marchand's brother."

"Then you're the second Marchand I've had up here," she said. "Come on."

She took me up in the service lift and walked me down a long corridor without a word.

At the end was a small lounge with six chairs, a window, and an upright piano with a cracked lid.

"Room fourteen is there," she said, pointing back along the hall. "The boy with the car crash. His mother sat with him from eight in the morning to ten at night."

"And his girlfriend?"
