Chapter 21: The Door
I followed her.
I told myself it was because Clarissa had asked me to, and that was half the reason.
The other half was that I wanted to see Colin's face when somebody else came to his door in the rain.
Etienne parked across the street from the Rutherford tower and cut the engine.
"You don't have to watch this," he said.
"Yes, I do."
He took my hand and said nothing more.
Delphine stood on the wide marble steps in front of the glass doors with her suitcase beside her.
It was raining again, and she had no umbrella.
Her hair was soaked flat, and her mascara had run down to her jaw.
She pressed the buzzer over and over.
The night doorman stood on the other side of the glass, a heavy man in a grey coat, and he did not open it.
"Colin!" she screamed. "Colin, it's me!"
A light came on high in the tower, on the forty-first floor.
I knew that window.
It was the office I had once brought lunch to, every Thursday, and left on the desk, and he had never looked up.
Five minutes later the doors opened and Colin came out alone.
He was in his shirt sleeves with no tie, and he had plainly not eaten since the gala.
He stopped at the top of the steps.
"Colin," Delphine said, and her whole face crumpled in a new way, a practised way, a way that had worked for nine years. "Thank God. Your mother has gone mad, she has frozen everything, and Etienne's grandmother has thrown me out of the house, and I've nowhere..."
"Go to a hotel," Colin said.
She blinked.
"Colin, darling..."
"Go to a hotel. You can pay for it yourself."
"I have no money. They have taken it all."
