Chapter 4: Stage Door

Colin caught me at the stage door, where a dozen students were waiting for the dean's list.

He took my wrist before I reached the street.

"We're going home, Hazel."

"Let go."

"You made your point in there. Everyone heard it. Get in the car."

The students had stopped talking.

A reporter from the arts section of the city paper had her phone out and her thumb on the red button.

"Colin," I said, loud enough for the whole step to hear, "I'm not a coat you left somewhere. Take your hand off me."

His fingers opened.

He looked around at the faces and put on his board-meeting smile.

"My wife is emotional," he told the reporter. "She's been under pressure."

"I'm not your wife in thirty days," I said. "You signed."

"I signed because I knew you'd tear it up by Friday."

"You signed because you've never once believed I would leave."

He stepped closer and lowered his voice, but not enough.

"I know what this is. Etienne Marchand is a bachelor with a deadline and a grandmother who wants him married. You are his answer. Don't be his answer."

I was surprised he knew about the deadline.

Then I saw the soft gray car at the curb, and Delphine's pale face in the back window, and understood who had told him.
