Chapter 5: For the Camera

The restaurant was called Maison Lisle, and every table in it had a view of every other.

Etienne had chosen it on purpose.

"The paper will say we were there by tomorrow," he said, holding my chair. "Better they say it with a photograph."

I wore a dark green dress he had sent to the apartment with no note.

It fit perfectly.

I decided not to ask how he knew my size.

We ordered, and he asked me about the Brahms, and I told him about my mother's kettle.

He listened without checking his phone once.

It was strange, being listened to.

Halfway through the main course I felt the room change.

I looked up and saw Colin come through the front door with Delphine on his arm.

The maître d' gave them the table beside ours.

"Don't turn around," Etienne said quietly.

"I'm not."

"She asked the maître d' for the table next to ours. He told me an hour ago."

"Why?"

"She wants to be kind to you in front of a witness."

I almost laughed.

Delphine stood up before the dessert came, with a champagne glass in her hand and her gray eyes bright.

"I only want to say something," she said, to the whole room.

The tables near us went quiet.

"My brother has been alone a long time. And Hazel is the kindest woman I know. I couldn't be happier that they found each other." She lifted the glass toward me and smiled. "To the sister I always wanted."
