Chapter 15: The Steps
The cell door opened at first light, and it was not the guards.
Bryn stood in the passage with a ring of keys in one hand and a split lip.
"The clerks have gone over to us," she said.
"Hurry up, you two, the whole harbor is on the steps."
Ilsa grabbed her coat.
Oren came after her on his own feet, and the ward-line on the bars went out as he walked through it.
They climbed the Hall stairs together and came out through the great doors into the morning.
The Hall steps were black with people.
Dockers filled the lower flights, shoulder to shoulder in their salt-stiff coats.
Fishwives stood with their arms folded, and children sat on their fathers' shoulders.
The old woman with the gutting knife stood in front, and she had left the pie at home.
Beside her stood a line of strangers in their best black.
There were over thirty of them, men and women, old and young, each holding a scrap of cloth or a worn boot.
