Chapter 7: The Break-In

The Marquis came at the hour of the horse with a hundred men.

Wanning was in the front hall, pouring tea for nobody, when the gate-keeper ran in with his hat in his hand.

"Princess, there are soldiers in the yard. Imperial Guards, with a decree."

"Whose?"

"The Crown Prince's seal."

She set the pot down.

"Where is Captain Shi An?"

"At the inner gate, Princess. He says he cannot draw steel against a decree."

"No," Wanning said. "He can't."

She smoothed her sleeves, and walked out onto the steps.

The Marquis of Anping stood at the bottom with his thumbs in his jade belt.

His wife was beside him in a fur collar, and behind them stood the steward, two maids, and a row of guards in the Crown Prince's yellow.

All of them had come to watch her fall.

"Princess Wei," the Marquis said, with a small bow, and made it an insult.

"My lord Marquis. You have come early for a family visit."

"I have come with the Crown Prince's decree." He took a roll of yellow silk from the steward and shook it open. "Since the Prince is near death and has no heir, his silver and his seals are to be held by the house of Pei until the Ministry decides. You will give me the keys of the treasury."

"May I read it?"

He held it out of her reach.

"The keys, girl."

"I am the Prince's wife," Wanning said. "By the Emperor's own edict, the household passes to me."
