Chapter 16: Why He Went

Lorcan's POV

I sat on the walkway with the gull guard's cloak over my knees and listened to Morwenna breathe through the window.

She was asleep on the floor of our room.

I had not asked her to come back to the bed, and she had not offered.

Bess came out at midnight with two mugs and sat down beside me without being invited.

"You look terrible," she said.

"Thank you."

"She said no to the Regent. To her face. In front of eleven lords." Bess blew on her tea. "I'd have paid money."

"I would have been sick."

"You'd have been proud."

I did not argue, because my skin would have told her I was lying.

"Can I ask you something," Bess said.

"You will whether I say yes or not."

"Why were you at the fair?"

The tea stopped halfway to my mouth.

"Nobody asked me that before," I said.

"Everyone's been too scared. Tristram said you went to buy a toy to spite the Regent."

"Tristram said that."

"The butcher said you were looking for something to eat."

I put down the mug.

"I went to buy a human," I said. "Any human."

Bess waited.

"Last spring a pet was sold to a man in the upper town. Within a month she was gone, and nobody asked where." I looked at the mudflats. "I heard it from the gate clerk. He laughed when he told me."

"I thought, if the law says a pet is property, then let me be the one who owns one. Then nobody else can."
