Chapter 19: The Rehearsal

Hollis Barn had been strung with a thousand white lights, and Vera had put every one of them there.

I stood inside the big doors on Wednesday evening with my mother's hand tucked in my arm and counted the tables.

There were eighteen, with ten chairs each.

Vera had turned the rehearsal dinner into a party for a hundred and eighty people, and the caterer had said yes.

At the far end, past the dance floor, a white screen as wide as a garage door hung from the rafters.

At the back wall, under it, was a folding table with a laptop and a sound board and a young man in a black T-shirt.

"That's the AV desk," I said quietly.

Our plan was simple. Winston would put our cut of the video in the place of hers, and my job was to keep Vera at the head table until the lights went down.

"Mm," said my mother. "I'm looking at the cheese."

She walked off to look at the cheese.

Winston was by the coat rack.

He wore a navy suit and a tie that was a half-inch too narrow, and when he saw me his whole face changed.

It wasn't dramatic. His mouth turned up on one side, and the corner of his eye creased.

I was not prepared for what that did to my knees.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

"You look..." He stopped. "I've used all the adjectives I have."

"Save one for later."

"I'm saving three."

Melina stood behind him in a dark green dress with her hair pinned up, holding a glass of club soda in both hands.

She looked pale and very straight.

"Has she arrived?" I whispered.
