Chapter 20: The Challenge

They fought on the hall steps with three hundred wolves around them and the moon straight overhead.

By law, nobody could stop it.

The Beta read the old words in a flat voice, and then Corwin and Lucan stripped to the waist on the top step, and each of them turned away from the other and shifted.

Corwin's wolf was huge and grey, with a scarred muzzle and pale eyes.

Lucan's was black, and a hand's width shorter.

I stood at the foot of the steps with Kerensa's fingers digging into my arm.

"He's fifty-eight," she whispered. "He's fifty-eight, and he's the Alpha. Ada, he's never lost."

"I know."

"I'm going to be sick."

The grey wolf struck first.

He hit Lucan in the shoulder with the whole weight of his body, and they went over the top step together.

They rolled down eight stairs of granite.

Lucan came up under him and got his teeth in the grey wolf's foreleg, and Corwin screamed and threw him off.

Lucan landed hard on his side.

Blood ran down his flank, bright in the moonlight, and the pull in my chest went tight and hot.

The grey wolf was on him again.

Lucan twisted and slashed at his belly, and missed.

Corwin caught him by the scruff and drove him into the stone.

I heard something in Lucan's ribs go.

He did not cry out.

He struggled up on three legs and went for his father's face, and the grey wolf bore him down.

The pack made a sound that was not a word.

Corwin stood over his son.

He had Lucan's head pinned under one paw, and he lowered his jaws to Lucan's throat.

Everyone saw it.

Everyone knew what a father's teeth there meant.
