Chapter 22: The Voice
Rosalind did not look at Dorian's hand.
If she looked, she would not be able to do what came next.
She kept her palms flat on Ansel Lowell's fur collar and her eyes on his face.
"Let go of the knife," she said.
He had already let go.
It hung in Dorian's palm, and the blood ran down the handle.
"Get your hands off me, girl."
"Kneel."
It was the oath voice.
It came up out of the Stone beneath her, out of the four hundred years of names, and it rang off the hall wall.
Ansel Lowell's legs folded under him.
He went down in the snow on both knees with a grunt of pure astonishment, and stayed there.
"What have you done?" he whispered.
"Nothing yet."
"I'm an Alpha. I'm sworn to Ironwood."
"Ironwood," said a dry voice from the foot of the steps, "was the twelfth family."
Everyone turned.
Maud had risen from her chair with the rug in her fists.
"The twelfth family that followed MacAlpin out of the old country, and left her in a quarrel over a woman, and took a slice of her oath with them when they went." She spat in the snow. "Your oath was cut from this Stone, Ansel Lowell. It has answered to MacAlpin since before your grandfather's grandfather. You never once asked what it was made of."
Ansel's face worked.
"Lies."
"Look at your riders."
He looked.
Forty Ironwood wolves sat their horses in the yard in perfect silence.
As he watched, the nearest dropped off his saddle and went to one knee, with his green sash trailing in the snow.
Then the man beside him.
Then the next.
They did not look at Rosalind.
They looked at the ground, and they were white to the lips.
"You will answer my questions," Rosalind said.
"I'll answer nothing."
"Who ordered the gas in the Gathering Hall pipes?"
