Chapter 13: Call Sheets
Averett told him at dawn, because there was nowhere left to put it.
Jarek lay on his back in the suite with one arm behind his head, staring at the ceiling.
He had said nothing for a long time.
"Not once," he said at last. "Say it again, so I know I heard it."
"I have never been to bed with anyone," Averett said. "Not before you."
"There are sixty-one women in the papers."
"There are sixty-one actors."
Jarek turned his head slowly on the pillow.
Averett sat up against the headboard with the sheet around his waist and took his phone off the nightstand.
His hands were steady, which surprised him.
"Ardith keeps copies," he said. "She has for four years. I never asked her to."
He opened a folder and passed the phone over.
Jarek took it and began to read.
The first page was four years old, on the letterhead of the Kingsbury brand office.
It said CALL SHEET at the top.
Under it were the lines Averett knew by heart.
