Chapter 15: The Cage
At two in the morning, Iron Row was empty except for the man in the cage.
Jarek Sobel had been hitting the same bag for three hours.
His hands were taped, his T-shirt was soaked through, and the bag swung on its chain with a groan.
He had no badge, no job and no reference.
He had a one-bedroom over a bakery in Greenpoint, nine thousand dollars in the bank and a phone that had not rung since ten.
He hit the bag again.
Behind him, the street door opened and shut.
He knew who it was before he turned.
Nobody else came to a boxing gym in Red Hook at two in the morning in a navy coat that cost more than the rent.
"You're not supposed to be here," Jarek said, without stopping.
"I'm aware."
"Where's your detail?" Jarek asked.
"I left them at the Tower," Averett said. "Ardith gave me the key to the service entrance."
"You came alone? On the subway?"
"In a taxi. The driver wanted a selfie."
Jarek hit the bag so hard that the chain rang.
Then he turned around.
Averett stood in the shadow of the heavy bags with his hands in his coat pockets.
He was pale and tired, with a streak on his cheek that might have been rain.
He looked very young, and he looked like the bravest man Jarek had ever met.
"Go home," Jarek said hoarsely.
"No."
"Averett. Tindle has people on you. If anyone follows you here..."
"I want them to," Averett said.
"You don't."
"I do." Averett took a step. "I'm tired of being safe."
He drew one hand out of his pocket.
